MALAS AT SWERTE: IBA'T IBANG PAMAHIING PILIPINO A SILKSCREEN EXHIBIT BY TEAM MANILA opens on May 5, 2007 7pm at Pablo Gallery, Cubao X
Ask a local to take a picture of you and two other friends, and he will comment, or at least joke, that the one in the middle might meet with misfortune. The belief would have been more frightening back in the days when one had to wait an excruciating hour to see if he appeared headless between his friends; nowadays, quick-preview LCD screens provide instant relief and liberation from this superstition.
This and other beliefs are at the brink of being forgotten, lurking instead in mysterious silence in websites and childhood memories. But accidentally bite your tongue and you will surely feel a surge of excitement, wishfully thinking somebody has remembered you. And remember the “kilig” feeling you get as you ask for a number when you suddenly get “samid”?
Filipino superstitions cover all aspects of everyday life, from conception to death, marriage and wealth. No matter how silly or unpleasant some of them might seem, one cannot escape the fact that they have been deeply ingrained in our culture. Some of them date back to our pagan past, made even more somber and daunting by Catholic overtones. Others have been contributed by our multi-cultural visitors. Through twists, revisions and adaptations to the local environment, these beliefs have evolved into a set wholly Filipino.
We have unearthed some of these beliefs and are presenting them in a new light. These pieces reflect bits of mysteries from our past, enlightened by the wisdom of modern graphic design. So enjoy--reminisce, reflect, and laugh at the disproved, if you must-- but please, no picture-taking in threes.
DIRECTIONS : drop at cubao station, then go out at the gateway exit to araneta center. walk to KFC then go straight ahead until you see puregold then go right. cubao x is near the jeepney stations over at alimall.
